Under 16 Women’s Football Season 2021
The under 16 2021 women’s season kicked off in November 2020 with a solid preseason skill and fitness campaign. With keen interest the squad quickly grew to 21 players, 10 of which took to the ground to play their very first season of AFLW.
Being one of the youngest squads in the under 16 competition, the first 3 rounds were challenging and presented the girls with a steep learning curve. As their confidence grew, the mighty South Gawler Lionesses were able to reap the reward for their efforts claiming a victory over Tanunda (who beat us in the first round) when team Captain Sophia Keane kicked the winning goal late in the last quarter to seal the deal. History was made on that day, being the very first win by the under 16 South Gawler Lionesses.
South Gawler: 5.1 -31 def Tanunda 3.2 -20.
The run home to the end of round 7 was a tough road however not once did the girls let down their guard down nor drop their heads, giving their all right up until the last minute of every game. As a squad, the girls have gelled into a tight knit group, played dam hard footy, set up a strong cultural footprint for women’s football at South Gawler, and most of all… Had a tonne of fun doing it!
Congratulations Lionesses in everything you have achieved for 2021, you and your families should be extremely proud,
Bring on 2022!
